New Hall was founded in 1954 as the "third foundation" for women students at Cambridge University at a time when Cambridge had the lowest proportion of women undergraduates of any university in the UK. Code Generation 2009 will be held at the college's excellent Buckingham House Conference centre a pleasant 10-minute stroll away from the historic city centre.
The College facilities are set among informal gardens, offering a peaceful conference setting with easy transport access from outside Cambridge. The college also has free parking available on site.
For the artistically-inclined New Hall is also home to the largest collection in Europe of contemporary works by women artists. Many of the works can be seen on permanent display around the College.
About Cambridge
Cambridge is a pretty university town with a history stretching back to pre-Roman times. The city is about 50 miles (80 Km) north of London from which it has excellent access by public transport (e.g. 45 minutes by regular express train) and by private vehicle.
Stansted (27 miles / 43 Km) and Luton (44 miles / 71 Km) airports are both close by, and are served by low-cost airlines from many European airports. Visitors may also arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick airports, which are further away, but still readily accessible by public transportation.
