Is this even real

I love this warning:

Warning: You need to restart your browser to force JSF to create a new instance of the LoginBean.

In an O'Reilly Network article on Java Server Faces. That has to be a joke. That must be 'server'.

Down with Jargon

I love this! Let's bring back straight talk. I'm tired of companies giving me thirty pages of drivel just to tell me that they are an SQL caching engine.

Classic Blog

I love this guys comment:

"It was a cold Friday and I was looking forward to working on a streaming MP3 jukebox server I'd been building with Flash and Java. I had no idea what was going to happen that day."

He goes on to say that he was laid off (I think, it was tough to discern). Dude, if you were going to work and working on a Java and Flash MP3 server, you were gonna get laid off.

Java Partial Classes

I'd really like to see what the Java partial classes model looks like now that I have seen the C# 2.0 specification. I don't understand what happens to the Java security model when I can re-open a class and add methods. Sounds like the security model goes bye bye.

Executable UML

I went to a meeting of the Silicon Valley ACM tonight with Eric and Mel to see Marc Balcer of ModelCompilers. He gave a great presentation. Though I was left trying to connect the dots between his book and tools that I could use to put them into practice.

I asked him which of the prominent MDA tools and he replied that he doesn't like to endorse particular tools. It was a followup question to another gentlemen who asked about how to put the theory into practice. He listed several companies, but I believe they are consulting shops and not tool vendors.

I'll contact him tonight for an interview for the site.

SQL Article, Part Deux

Shortly after I wrote my first article on the proper use of SQL databases a guy by the name of Darryl Hasieber contacted me and we got to talking about a followup article about the often overlooked advantages of SQL databases. That article is now up on DevX.

So far the response has been good, but it has been from the choir. I need to figure out how to get to engineers with two to five years of experience. My guess is that I have to write articles about cutting edge APIs with lots of code examples, then put a little practical experience in there.

When you are just starting out you want to hear about the how and not the why. It has a lot to do with Shu-Ha-Ri which is the model of learning a new skill. First you have to learn the raw mechanics (Shu), then you become comfortable with the mechanics and master them (Ha), then you transcend the mechanics and you become a master of the skill (Ri). I need to move away from the Ha and Ri articles and more towards the Shu end of the spectrum if I ever want to change the art of software engineering.

FeedDemon

I'd been hearing about FeedDemon for a couple of weeks. I finally downloaded the demo. It's great. Fast, elegant and easy to use.
